I smell like butter
Matt and I have been trying to eat at home more often, both because we'd like to eat healthier than most restaurants make doable and wouldn't mind saving money in the bargain. So we've been trying out a lot of new recipes, mostly from our favorite cooking show, Good Eats. Some things like the granola bars have been big hits, but like any cooking show, the majority of the dishes lean to the unhealthy side. For instance, tonight I made Chicken Piccata for the first time. That's chicken pounded flat, floured, and fried in a metric ton of butter. Then you add shallots (the "vegetable"), white wine, lemon juice, and more butter to make a sauce so rich that you only need to wave your pasta near it. The result is, naturally, crazy delicious. The downside is that I'll apparently smell like butter for days, not to mention that I should probably take a year off my life expectancy. I don't think that one will be going into the regular rotation.

Joe and I tried Alton's Mint Julep.
It's in our regular rotation.
I would imagine that it would take a couple of years off our lives, too....
We haven't tried any of his cocktails yet, although that is a really good episode. And the whole Colonel act he does with the mint julep is great. We did his turkey brining last Thanksgiving, though, and we are definitely doing it again this one. Turned out really great.
I am happy and sad to lack the Food Network at my house. Some of the programming is great and offers valuable cooking insight and instruction but I found I was watching far too much of it.
Turkey brining, eh?
We limit ourselves just to Good Eats and Feasting on Asphalt, since we really only enjoy Alton Brown. Definitely used to watch more Food Network back when I lived with the other Amy B, not to mention way too much TLC.
I do recommend the turkey brining. He also doesn't actually use stuffing in the bird (he argues that the stuffing slows down cooking enough that the bird actually turns out drier) but instead just shoves a bit of sliced fruit and vegetables up there for flavor.
